Our Vision and Values
We are a Church of England primary school located in the village of Wick situated between Bristol and Bath. We have a talented staff who provide a fantastic education for our children in accordance with our Christian vision, “Wherever the river flows, life will flourish” – Ezekiel 47:9.
This is to represent Golden valley and the river which nourishes everything allowing life to flourish and thrive. This vision connects us to the River Boyd which flows through the Golden Valley nature reserve in the heart of Wick, close to our school. The Golden Valley is a key component in the education we offer our children and an important part of the local area. It is a unique part of Wick.
Our vision statement represents the way in which we nurture our children spiritually, academically, emotionally and socially to be the best they can be.
Rivers are often used as a metaphor in the Bible to convey spiritual truths and “living water” is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, source of life and spiritual nourishment.
In the past, the waters of the River Boyd were crucial for the running of watermills which powered industrial enterprises such as the Wick Golden Valley Ochre Works. Nowadays, the Golden Valley nature reserve is easily accessible* to local residents and to the children from our school, who regularly visit the area to engage in learning activities.
The River Boyd runs through a diverse range of habitats, and supports a great variety of birds, bats, animals, insects, trees and plants. This ecosystem is a community of living organisms working and interacting together, relying on each other to thrive.
At our school, we believe in creating a community where every child can thrive, inspiring and achieving together. Just as the River Boyd gathers strength and momentum to continue its onward journey, we aspire to help each and every child to navigate their own path forward, encouraging them to thrive, learn and grow. Our Christian values are crucial in inspiring our children to be their best and to help each other achieve and flourish. Every child and every member of staff is a vital part of our learning community, working and interacting together, relying on each other to thrive.
We aim to prepare our pupils for their onward journey, ensuring they are equipped with the full range of skills that will allow them to be lifelong learners, ready for the next steps in their education and ready to engage with the wider world. We will help our children to be curious, ask probing questions and be brave in finding solutions. They will engage with the familiar and be engaged by the unusual; they’ll be immersed in language; they will know how to practise, be resilient and challenged; they’ll be proud of their local environment and think on a global scale; they will work individually and add their voices to the many; they will learn to accept help, give charitably and embrace altruism; they will learn to love difference, be different and stand up for the rights of others, just because it is the right thing to do. They will be courageous advocates. We want them to be relentlessly creative, critically curious and to live ambitiously.
* (The nature reserve is currently closed due to ash dieback but once re-opened, it will continue to be an important element of our children’s learning experience.)
